We are only 30 minutes from the fabulous family friendly golden atlantic beaches at Royan and only 15 minutes from the quaint fishing ports on the massive Gironde estuary. The area is steeped in history and has a range of good quality family tourist attractions, several are world class.
Set in gently rolling countryside and surrounded by woodland, apple orchards, sunflowers and vineyards yet only a short drive to the coast. The local lanes are a delight for a quiet stroll or a family cycle ride when you can spot lots of interesting wildlife including huge birds of prey circling the woodland. When you are bored with watching the sun go down over your BBQ, there are plenty of good restaurants within a short drive.
There are a wealth of pretty villages and fishing harbours to be explored on the nearby massive Gironde Estuary, 15 minutes by car. There are cycling paths and fishing along much of the estuary shore. The fabulous golden family-friendly beaches at Royan and St Georges are little more than half an hour away. You have a choice of sophisticated and safe town beaches, cornish coves with superb rock pools and completely wild atlantic surf. If you bring a fishing rod you could have some really fresh fish for the BBQ!
Royan, St Georges and Meschers offer everything you would expect from good seaside resorts. There is a world class zoo just north of Royan at La Palmyre.
There are a wide range of tourist attractions for adults and children for example, the aquarium at La Rochelle is superb, you can become a prehistoric man and try to spear a wild boar at the Paleosite near Saintes, you can go boating on the river Charente or the sea at Royan, there are caves to explore and loads of the usual seaside entertainments like mini-golf. We have a superb Go-Kart track and paint-balling less than 5 minutes by car.

There is so much to explore and the history is extraordinarily rich. The nearby town of Saintes offers Roman arches, amphitheatre and churches to explore and a plethora of chateaux and restaurants are waiting to be discovered. Friendly relaxing gite

This place is lovely and the people and neighbours are very nice. Tony (owner) is very helpful and everything Is suitable for manual wheelchairs. Its very relaxing and there are lots of things to do. We loved the swimming pool, the games room, the rope swing, the basket ball and the BBQ. We all loved the go-karting nearby and they will even help you to drive if you are in a wheelchair. The night market in Jonzac is great for eating in the street.

Leaving today after an excellent week of sightseeing, relaxing and sampling much of the local wine! Tony (the owner) is extremely helpful and the facilities, particularly for wheelchair bound disabled visitors are excellent. Great location, beautifully converted barn with excellent access. One week was nowhere near enough! We’ll be back !!

Magnificent , accessible accommodation in Charente-Maritime

Truly, a family (7 bed) accommodation where ground floor is wheelchair accessible. Fully equipped shower room ( no steps, seat, grab rails) makes for a safe relaxed area. Tony is an attentive, knowledgeable host.Having just spent a week here (18-24/6/16) I have no hesitation in recommending this accommodation.

Excellent accessible accomodation.

Without doubt the best accessible accommodation we have stayed in in France. Low threshold front and rear doors make transition from the WAV to the house easy. A large downstairs bedroom with adapted en-suite wet-room greets you just inside the front door. Nowhere downstairs are there any steps or bumps....completely flat!

Access to the outside patio is easy, with a concrete incline up to garden level. Access to the lovely pool is by way of across the lawn, which may be slightly undulating/bumpy for wheelchairs with smaller radius wheels.

A very big plus though for this accommodation is the owner: Tony is the most obliging host you could possibly meet. Like having one of your friends already on site! an absolute mine of useful knowledge.

There are some useful websites for local services should you need to hire a mobile hoist (in Jonzac - quite close) for the wet-room, or maybe to help with access to the pool:

http://www.jonzacmedicalservice.com/

Or if you've flown in to Bordeaux and need to hire an adapted vehicle:

http://www.ulysse-transport.fr/ (Main contact - speaks reasonable English - Jean-Luc BANABERA
jlbanabera@ulyssetpmr.fr)

Both services speak good English (Unless your French is that good of course).

Le Manoir (St Sigismond de Cleremont

We stayed at Le Manoir for the second year, previously in June, this time in September. If anything, the September stay was even better than the first. Accommodation is excellent for wheelchair confined guests and able bodied guests alike. Tony, the owner, is on hand and a mine of information for all local things to do. We hired bikes.cycling around the local lanes is very quiet and picturesque. the local supermarket in Mirambeau is less than 10 mins drive away and has a good selection of everything you could want, including, of course, very reasonably priced (and very good) wines!. Lots of places to visit within 30 mins drive, including Cognac, Jonzac, Royan and Pons. Good restaurants in all of these places.

Le Manoir is the perfect location for a quiet countryside break with access to many interesting sites. We will dwefinitely be back!

Rural & Medieval Beauty Spot

Just back from two weeks at Le Manoir (26th August - 9th September). It's a beautiful place sitting in four acres of mature garden. We stayed in the larger three bedroom gite which had every modern convenience housed in a beautifully restored rustic stone exterior. My husband had his motorised wheelchair with him and found it simple to navigate both indoors and out. Our congenial host provided everything to make it possible for my husband to manage toileting and showering and also raised the height of the bed. My husband is mostly housebound so it was a treat for him to be able to let himself out of the gite each day to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.
The supermarket is roughly a five minute drive away in Mirambeau and is large and well stocked with everything you could need. There is also a good little boulangerie with delicious bread and deserts.
If you are up for exploring Le Manoir is a great base with places like Cognac and La Rochelle to visit but also a relaxing and peaceful place to go to simply chill out.
