Disabled Holidays Normandy, France

24th November 2009

The building of La Fresnaie at Le Haut Fresnay in Normandy was completed in July 2007 and the house has now been in use for almost 3 years.  The 2009 season has been just as busy as the previous two and 2010 is already heavily booked. In fact, apart from one week in August (starting 21 August), and one week in September (starting 18 September), the only vacancies we have left are in April 2010  (the 4 weeks starting 3 April) and 3 weeks starting 23 October 2010. Our available weeks sell like hot cakes, many of them to clients returning for a second or third visit and who have simply not found anywhere else to match the facilities offered by La Fresnaie. Australia taste Wheelchair Rugby success

19th November 2009

Ryley Batt was in unstoppable form as Australia beat New Zealand 53-45 in the final of the Asia-Oceania Zone Wheelchair Rugby Championship at the Pioneer Stadium in Christchurch on Sunday. His immense strength and speed meant the Wheel Blacks had difficulty stopping Batt, who became the youngest ever Wheelchair Rugby Paralympian in 2004 aged just 15, from stamping his authority on the game. "Even when we put three players on him we could not contain him for long. He was extraordinary," admitted New Zealand coach Greg Mitchell afterwards. Australia had beaten New Zealand 45-44 in the round robin stages on Friday and come the halfway point of the final the rivals were separated only by two points, the Wheel Blacks taking advantage of Batt spending some time off co...

Gurkhas push wheelchairs at Spike Island, Widnes

19th November 2009

3 elite combat troops have swapped battlefields for a charity wheelchair push in Widnes. Gurkhas from GCM Brecon pushed wheelchair users from Spike Island to Lymm. The event was to raise cash for the Gurkha Welfare Trust, the Wrexham and District Physically Disabled and Able Bodied (Phab) group, and the Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. Seven volunteers also helped. John Wiggan, organiser, said the event has already raised £2,000 and more cash is set to roll in from sponsors towards their £3,000 target. Halton mayor Frank Fraser saw off the charity party on Saturday. They embarked from the Catalyst Museum car park on a trip that finished in Lymm on Sunday. During the 17-mile journey, the group also stayed at Crown Gate Barracks in Runcorn, base of the 80 Signa...

Students Give Wheelchair Rugby A Try

19th November 2009

CREWE students were in a spin after teaming up with a disability wheelchair group to tackle rugby at South Cheshire College. The sessions were co-ordinated by Alan Caron, community development manager for Wolverhampton Rhinos and took place in the college’s sports hall. Students had a go at using offensive and defensive rugby wheelchairs to wheel themselves around and were securely fastened in with waist and ankle supports. Chris Hollinshead, sports lecturer, said: “Students who participated in the day learnt a lot about what it’s like to play sport with a disability. “They learnt how to a...

The BBC casts deaf actress in lead role

An untried deaf actress has been handed the lead role in in a primetime BBC thriller. Genevieve Barr will play deaf teenager Amelia Edwards, who witnesses a murder while staying with relatives in a new BBC1 fourpart series called The Silence. It is her first major role, which she won while on the Teach First training scheme, teaching in a challenging inner London school. Last night Genevieve said: "The Silence is a fantastic opportunity to explore life through a deaf person's eyes and I am thrilled to have been offered the role. "I have my hands full with Amelia! I have had my first day of filming and it was exhausting but amazing playing my first scenes opposite Gina McKee, who plays my mother." Swiss could call time on assisted suicide

19th November 2009

The Swiss government has proposed legislation that would make it illegal for disabled people from the UK to go to clinics there to commit suicide. Politicians have put forward two proposals in an effort to regulate the practice of assisted suicide. The first would ban assisted suicide outright, and a second would involve restrictions on who could seek assistance to die. Under the second proposal, which is said to be favoured by parliament, an assisted suicide organisation would have a duty of care to help only people with a terminal illness and who declare their wish to die, and who have given long and proper consideration to their decision. Organisations would also need to obtain the medical opinions of two independent doctors certifying that the person has the legal...

Wheelchair friendly holidays in Wales

22nd October 2009

We asked Jim why he made his Farm accommodation accessible? 'My grandparents first offered holidays on the farm in 1967. My Grandmother was a really caring person and providing access to the countryside was really important to them. From the 1980s my mother started making notes over what people needed to make their stays easier and when we converted more Victorian farm buildings 10 years ago her notes were invaluable. We love sharing our farm with visitors. We have a lot to do to make the whole farm accessible, but with tractor/trailer rides around and a low gradient woodland sculpture trail, we are getting there!' Feedback comments include: ‘Perfectly prepared for all our needs…we had a wonderful family holiday’ We were able to sleep, eat, unwind an...

How to advertise disabled access accommodation on the internet

9th October 2009

The most successful websites promoting accessible accommodation with wheelchair access for the disabled and the elderly are the ones that inform, promote and inspire the desire of travel. Wording can be a challenge but facts and images override any text. Many owners feel it's "not very pretty or elegant" to show pictures of the toilet and shower, however, this is a barrier that many disabled people face when deciding on travel; "can I get to and on the toilet? Is there a level access shower?". We at accessatlast.com live and breath this business and we compliment owners marketing strategies with our excellent website. What do we offer owners? 1. The ability to create an advert that's accessible, easy to read and informative 2. Secure access to our easy to use Con...
