Co-operative Travel rolls out custom holidays for the disabled

February 17 2010 The Co-operative Travel has launched a dedicated service for disabled holiday-makers after a survey revealed widespread discontent with the current situation. The survey of 215 disabled travellers, conducted by the Co-operative Group’s travel-arm with charity Tourism for All, found 84 per cent of respondents did not believe high street travel agents understood their needs and 78 per cent did not think they were catered for. Co-operative Travel to improve service to disabled customers

(15 February 2010) The Co-operative Travel is to improve its service to disabled travellers, after a survey revealed disabled people lack confidence in booking holidays through high street travel agents. The study, carried out with UK disabled tourism charity Tourism for All, found that 85% of respondents did not believe agents understood the needs of disabled travellers, and that 78% did not think they were catered for by the high street. The survey also found that 93% of disabled travellers found their choice of holidays restricted due to their disability. A course to improve the driving skills of mobility scooter users has been set up by Norfolk Police because they are worried about the number of accidents involving the vehicles. Mannequin dolls, simulating pedestrians on the high street, are among the obstacles drivers have to negotiate. Derby health trust missing 60,000 medical items

Some 60,000 pieces of medical equipment are missing in Derby, health officials bosses have revealed. NHS Derby City PCT said £1.5m worth of items, including wheelchairs, crutches, hoists and beds, have been loaned to patients and not been returned. Jill Collinson, the trust's Director of Engagement, said in most cases people had forgotten they had the equipment. She appealed for patients or their relatives to return the equipment to the trust. Ms Collinson said: "When people are sick and being cared for in hospital or in the community, they often need specialist bits of equipment.
